Getting through
This last week has been hell. I have been overwhelmed with work, school, my practicum and just life in general. Reflecting on this converstation with my friend H is the only thing that got me through:
Me: I am having the worst time finding a therapist to work with this family. No one will take this case.
H: This sounds a lot like the first case I received as a new therapist working in child welfare. I was meeting with the family in the home, there were roaches everywhere and a dirty mattress on the floor. The father scratched his crotch when he opened the door for me. Then in the middle of therapy, the mother took her eye out, and showed it to me. She wanted me to TOUCH it!
Me: I hope it was a glass eye?
H: yes, a glass eye.
So, this week wrapping up school and my practicum, while getting crappy cases piled on me at work, I have been telling myself, “at least no one has taken their eye out.”

You know, I never had anyone take their eye out either. Of course, I only lasted 9 months in social work…
